  An Independent Woman

To my Aunt Jo-Ann and her husband Louis,

  thanks for the undying support.

I sleep, but my heart waketh: it is the voice of my beloved that knocketh, saying, open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled: for my head is filled with dew, and my locks with the drops of the knight.

  Songs of Solomon 5:2

  Man of my Dreams

Your heart speaks to me in endless blissful words, that brings my wishful soul to long for what I've heard.

Am I awake or am I deep in sleep, your voice echoes to my mind and fills my needs.

Did you not know your tender phrase would make me see, the unclear depth of you, some mystery.

Your charm, your wit, your fervent zeal and sum, were I to dream I'd dream of only one.

Of dreams some say they scarcely do come true, yet flesh and blood is real and so there's you.

To God above and all that He can do, for Eve's who wished for Adam's made anew.

For all I see, to chance and further fate, a new...there's you...just you...there's only you.

Where were the voices coming from? Katherine could hear someone speaking in the room. It was a strange voice, the voice of a woman and then a man spoke. The rich manly tone of his voice soothed her. Then moments later, she heard the door close. She felt oddly stranger than she ever felt before. Her head throbbed violently, her body ached. What had happened to her? Where was Caleb, was he alright?

The car that had hit them came out of nowhere. He yelled out, she screamed and then all went silent. Katherine shivered from the cold as the darkness encompassed her. She was frightened. It was far too silent. She felt all alone as the seconds, minutes trailed by and then a hand touched her hand, lightly, gently, warmly clasping her hand in his. Her name was longingly whispered, deeply whispered. She slowly found the will to open her eyes because he was there with her…Caleb was at her side! He was alright! They had made it. All would be well!

Slowly, dimly at first the light pooled into her eyes and the brightness of the day swept around her as she gripped his hand for strength, as if he was her life force. They had been together for quite a long time. They were dating since their sophomore year of College. No. It was not the old cliché, the captain of the football team, dating the head cheerleader. They were different. Their relationship was real; it was special. Caleb was everything she had ever dreamt of and when they were together she was so happy. He made her very happy.

Katherine managed to smile, despite the pain. Caleb had always said he would never leave her and here he was, at her side, bowed down in loving reverence. No he was nothing at all like her father, who had made her so many promises, more unkept promises than she could count. Katherine’s father was a fair-weather dad as well as a fair-weather husband to her mother. He left her mother when she was ten years old.

“Don’t cry sweetheart,” he said, “Daddy won’t be gone for long.” Yet he sent her mother the divorce papers in a matter of weeks and was now remarried to another woman who had given him two sons.

Sons…he didn't really have a use for a daughter and now her father had his complete wish, two strong, healthy boys who seemed to worship the ground he walked on. But they were young. They would see someday what she had not seen until she was older, and then, maybe then, he would lose the love of all of his children. She shivered again from the thought.

But Caleb helped heal that ache. He was her knight in shining armor. When Katherine looked into his eyes she saw hope, hope that all could go well, that love could last. Hadn’t he said it himself? It was a thrilling thought, them together forever. How much she loved him, how much he loved her. What she felt for him, she could never imagine feeling for another.

“You are here with me,” Katherine whispered the words as though she was in awe of them, of him, warmed by his nearness.

“Katherine,” he said her name and kissed the hand he was reverently clasping.

It was a light feathery kiss which eased her. She smiled because he was here, now, beside her. They were both safe away from harm, all would be right. This she felt in the depths of her heart because Caleb was here and this was all that mattered.

“Katherine?” his voice sounded choked as he said her name again.

She could feel him tremble and knew he was in awe of her as she was of him. The lonely ache Katherine had always experienced fled away when ever Caleb was at her side.

“I love you,” she whispered. “I love you so much…” Her voice sounded shaky as she said those words. Katherine felt the tears sting the back of her eyes. She swallowed, nearly choked by the deep emotions that swept over her. It felt like a million years since they had been together, held hands…like a million years the longing she had to be with him. It was a deep ache every time they were apart, like her right arm had been severed, like all would not be well until they were reunited again.

She remembered the first time she saw Caleb. He was standing on the football field, all by himself…just standing there, watching the field as though he couldn’t get enough of that place, as though he were entirely captivated by it. Then he turned, somehow sensing he was not alone, and their eyes locked. When she tried to leave he called out to her, greeted her, charmed her, and wooed her. Three weeks later they were dating, which was a surprise to every guy at school, because not once in nearly two years had Katherine even so much as looked at a boy. She turned down every guy who was brave enough to ask her out, including Henry who was another star player on the football team. Then suddenly, she was with Caleb.

  “Only you,” she whispered wholeheartedly.

“Shhh.” He kissed her hand again and then he slowly raised his head.

Quite anxiously she waited to see him, to look into the blue loving depths of his eyes. She could look into Caleb’s eyes forever──

But when his eyes met hers, when their gaze finally locked, it wasn’t the ruggedly handsome face of Caleb which hovered above her, but of another man with sharp angelic features, e
xcept for the scar which now graced his left cheek. He was a man who made most women melt, with his light golden hair and tall refined stature. Katherine gasped pulling her hand away from him, as vivid green eyes rested upon her, haunting green eyes.

“Myles?” she said his name in disbelief. What was he doing here? Who let him in? Where was Caleb? How could Caleb let him in, knowing how she felt about Myles, knowing how much she disliked him.

Myles smiled. “Katherine, you’re awake!” He reached out to touch her again, but she pulled her hand away once more. He looked tenderly at her now. “Sweetheart what’s wrong?”

She looked puzzlingly at him as he sat in the chair at her side. Katherine did not like the sound of love words coming from Myles. She had never desired to be one of his conquests. She detested the way girls at school surrounded him, squealing and acting silly when he appeared.

“Why…why are you here?” she asked with a note of surprise in her voice, as she studied him.

“Katherine, where else would I be?” Myles gaze rested warmly upon her as he spoke.

She intensely studied him then. This was all quite odd. Why did Myles look at her as if they were more than friends, as though there was a deeper intimacy to their relationship than there truly ever was? They had never really truly been close, Myles was simply a friend of Caleb’s, and Katherine had never liked him. He was not the type of person she would willingly socialize with.

Myles was filthy rich, if you like the rich and obnoxious type, which she did not. Myles had a chauffeur who looked like a butler out of an old English novel, who drove him around in a 1942 Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn. Myles was a tall, handsome, sophisticated, young man every girl in their university seemed to be after, well every girl, but Katherine. He wore the right clothes, said the right things and for the most part hung out with all of the right people, which was completely opposite of her…since she was poor and was fortunate enough to attend the University of Pennsylvania on a four-year scholarship. No, Myles was not Katherine’s cup of tea nor would she ever be his.

“Where is Caleb, why isn’t he here?” She looked around the room feeling lost, confused and abandoned.

Now it was Myles who looked puzzled. “You don’t want me, do you?” There was a hurt look in his eyes, yet his question was a strange one, it was rather silly really. Why would she want him?

“I want Caleb──” she stated coolly.

He could see that Katherine was getting more agitated as she spoke.

“Hush,” Myles said as he moved to touch her brow, to sooth her, but stopped when she flinched. Something was the matter with Katherine…or was he denying what had always been the obvious, her love for Caleb? Katherine spoke those three little words with ease when she awoke, I love you. Myles had foolishly hoped those words were spoken for him. Now he knew it was not so and it felt as though he had been struck by her, rudely awakened to the reality of their situation. Katherine had never said she loved him, not once. After all, their marriage hadn't begun with love. Not in five year had she ever told him she loved him. Theirs was a quiet dutiful marriage. He did his best as a husband and a father, while Katherine was a wonderful mother who tolerated his presence. But that had never been enough and now he wanted more. He wanted her love.

“Why did they let you in here and not Caleb?” She flinched again as the pain in her head seemed to grow more intensely than it had at her waking moment.

Her question put him on the defense. They had argued over Caleb before, but now was not the right time. Myles wanted to put it all behind them, to make a brand new start. “Caleb isn’t here because I’m here. Katherine I have more right to be in here than he does──” Myles said trying to let her see, what she somehow didn’t see.

“No you don’t.” Katherine shook her head. “He-he’s my boyfriend.” It was strange having to explain this fact to Myles, since he knew, the whole university was aware Katherine was dating Caleb Johnson, the best football player in the history of UPenn.

Myles slowly shook his head. “No Katherine. Caleb is not your boyfriend,” Myles spoke with a surety that brought a chill up her spine.

Had something happened to Caleb, was this why he wasn’t there in the room beside her? Was there something Myles knew that he was not telling her?

“I’m your husband, Katherine,” he said the words deeply as though it ached him to speak them. “You’re married to me, not Caleb.” His eyes willed her to see this.

“You…you’re lying.” She shook her head in denial. This was crazy, he had lost his mind!

“Katherine,” Myles was looking at her now as though he was seeing her for the first time, “sweetheart.”

“Don’t call me sweetheart; I’m not your wife!” Her heart was racing, her head felt light.

“Darling──” Katherine was looking at him as though she didn’t know him, as though she didn’t──

“No!” She slowly shook her head, as she tried to sit up, but groaned when her right arm throbbed. It couldn’t be. She would never marry him. What Myles said sounded crazy. Where was her mother? If anyone could make sense of any of this, it was her mother.

“No, don’t try to get up, you’ll only hurt yourself and…” Myles voice trailed off as his gaze settled on her belly.

Katherine tensed. She nearly groaned, fearing to look down, fearing what she might see. Could it all be true? Were they really married? And then her gaze fell upon her belly. She had not entirely been aware of her person upon awakening, besides the aches she felt…yet there it was, a sight which could not be ignored nor explained away…Katherine was with child. The tears came them, rolling down her cheeks. She began to cry, turning into her pillow when he tried to comfort her. She would not be comforted. All was wrong in the world, in her world, because this meant she would forever be trapped at his side.

“No! No! No!” she screamed as she sobbed into the pillow.

The door to her hospital room burst opened minutes later, and when she looked up Katherine found her mother and Caleb standing there at the entrance.

“What is going on Myles, we heard screaming, we heard──” Mrs. London’s eyes turned toward the bed where her daughter laid. “Katherine!”

“Mother,” Katherine whispered, feeling her fears ease by the sight of her mother.

“Katherine,” her mother said smiling, though tears came to her eyes as the realization hit her that her daughter was finally awake. “Oh Katherine!” Her mother walked into the room, up to her daughter and clasped her left hand, while Caleb took three steps into the room, gazing upon her as though she were an apparition.

“You’re awake,” Caleb said sounding choked, moved by a deep and abiding emotion. He looked up towards the ceiling, closed his eyes and shook his head as though he were in prayer, “Thank God you’re awake,” he said again.

“Caleb, you’re here,” Katherine spoke those words tenderly as she looked longingly at Caleb, the way she had not gazed upon her husband.

Myles watched as she stretched out her hand, the way she had not reached out for him when she opened her eyes. His heart sank. Yes she had said the words I love you, was that not evident in her eyes now?

“Oh Myles, Katherine has come back to us, to you,” Mrs. London said as she smiled down at her daughter and planted a kiss on her slightly bruised cheek, unaware of what he'd seen or came to realize. Myles took a deep breath. He had lost Katherine in more ways than one.

“Is everything alright Mr. Manley?” a pretty nurse said, who was standing within the frame of the doorway, in her crisp white nursing gown and cap, her eyes transfixed on him with much admiration.

“My wife’s awake,” Myles said as he watched Katherine smiling up at Caleb. Yes awake and in love with another man. Myles felt his fist tighten, his fingernails biting into the palm of his hands.

“That is wonderful! I’ll go get Dr. Grant.”

He nodded unaware of when the nurse left, unaware of what exactly would happen now, since Katherine remembered to rea
ch out to everyone, but him.

Dr. Grant was in the room with Katherine and her mother for quite some time. Her doctor was a kind man, telling her how pleased they all were to have her awake, since she had been unconscious for nearly two weeks. He asked her questions about her life and family, questions she seemed to answer though he frowned from time to time and made notes. When he moved to leave, Katherine stopped him.

  “Doctor, what’s wrong with me?”

Dr. Grant cleared his throat, and then looked at his notes once more. “There are bruises to your arms and legs which are healing well. Your right arm is sprained. Are you experiencing much pain?”

  “A little.” Katherine nodded.

“That is understandable since you had a traumatic blow to your head. What is the very last thing you remember, before you awoke?” Dr. Grant asked.

“I…I was in a car, Caleb was driving and a car hit us. That’s it.” She touched the bandage on her forehead.

Katherine’s mother affectionately squeezed her hand.

“Where were you coming from?” the doctor asked.

Katherine thought about it for a moment. “We were…coming from a football game. Caleb’s team, our universities team,” she looked thoughtful, “won.”

“How old are you Mrs. Manley?”

Katherine flinched at the mention of that name. She could never truly be Mrs. Myles Manley. She had never wished for this title, never longed for the social standing that name gave, nor the opportunities it presented for someone like herself. She had grown up poor, complacent and proud, detesting everyone who bowed to the slightest whim of the Manley family.

  “Mrs. Manley?” Dr. Grant repeated.

Katherine blinked as she looked down on the swell of her stomach. Was this the reason why Myles married her, because she was with child? Katherine felt her cheeks grow warm. What did the doctor think about a girl being in this condition at such a young age? And her mother, how had she taken the news when Katherine told her about the baby?
